Using Twitter to Buy Domains

Dec 22, 2009 No Comments by

I decided to handreg one of the most popular twitter trending topics from the last few days. After the hashtag, I managed to register the exact term.

Already, I’m receiving some traffic but this is an experiment and the verdict is still out. The beauty of regging a hot trending topic is that you have rising search traffic and tons of brandable buzz on Twitter.

The negatives are that a trend can be just that, a brief spark, rather than a lasting brand. Many trending topics are dirty or humorous such as “douche lord”, which became popular after Khloe Kardashian used the phrase. These phrases are probably not worth the reg as they are hard to monetize other than by setting up a parking page — unless you want to call your new company douchelord.com :-) (I do not own this name). Also, many trending topics are 5+ words or more and are not memorable for a domain name whatsoever. Use your judgment.

I’ve also started to check IDNs on Twitter before pulling the trigger on a registration to get a rough sense of the term’s usage and popularity. Food for thought.
